Room sharing cuts housing costs, plain and simple. In Houston today, the average rent for a studio apartment is about $1,010 - $1,100. Add another $200 for utilities and Wi-Fi, and it easily tops $1,300. You may not have a great location, and you may still have to haul your laundry out each week.

But spare room housing is not for everyone. You share common areas and sometimes bathrooms with others. (I grew up sharing a single bathroom with 4 other people.)
